Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. This condition causes inflammation of the fascia tissue that run from the heel along the sole and all the way to the toes. It’s characterized by a jarring, sudden or stabbing pain in the bottom of the foot, either around or on the heel. You may notice that pain is worse when you first start moving in the morning or when you’ve been standing for an extended period of time.

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by everything from being overweight to having flat feet to playing certain sports or participating in certain physical activities. If working out is a normal part of your routine, look for low-impact activities like swimming that won’t put added strain on your feet.
