Ingrown toenails happen when the nail plate of the toenail grows into the skin. When this condition is not treated on a timely basis, it can develop into an infection or abscess. Ingrown toenails are usually found in adults and normally occur in the big toe. Factors leading to this condition include poorly fitting shoes, an improper nail-trimming method, fungal infections causing thickened toenails, traumatic injuries near the nail or genetic predispositions acquired later in life. Signs that you have an ingrown toenail include a reddened toenail that’s painful and inflamed. Treatment for this condition includes soaking feet in warm water, utilizing antibiotics to fight resulting infections, trimming toenails correctly, not wearing high-heeled shoes or those with tight-fitting toe boxes, and wearing sandals or other open toe shoes.
If a severe infection develops, it may be necessary to perform a surgical procedure to correct this condition. Surgery will remove the nail bed or drain an abscess. Also, a medical professional can use a special chemical to stop the growth of cells in the section of the nail that was digging into the skin. That portion of the nail will not regrow and cause the same problem again.
