Charcot Foot Reconstruction and You

Charcot Foot Reconstruction can be required due to the damage caused by Charcot foot for many individuals. It is basically a wearing of your foot’s joints and bones and can severely impact patients with diabetes. Those with diabetes have a heightened level of long-term complications with their feet due to their lowered level of sensation and reduced ability of healing from lessened blood flow.

Charcot foot will cause your foot’s bones to become fragile and break more easily than usual. Charcot foot tends to affect those who have already sustained a foot or ankle injury that has caused a loss of sensation. Your Charcot foot can reduce calcium and other components that help to keep your foot’s bones strong. The significant problem for those with diabetes revolves around the continued walking on an injured foot that leads to further breaks and damage due to the increase in sores. Charcot foot can cause severe deformities to your feet to the extent that reconstruction of your foot may be needed to repair damage and to bring its function back to normal.

Treatment for this condition includes:

  • Reconstruction will not only fix physical damage but also eliminate infections through the use of devices that are covered with antibiotics or other antimicrobial agents.
  • Implants and other devices will be used to restructure your foot and to provide a level of stability taken away by the Charcot injury.
