5 Ways To Prevent Athlete’s Foot

It starts as a persistent itch between your toes. The itching soon gets worse and spreads to the soles and other parts of your feet. Skin is dry, flaky and red. Eventually, blisters may form which will open and create tender, sore spots that are painful and may become infected. At Benenati Foot & Ankle Care Centers, we recognize these as symptoms of athlete’s foot, or as it is officially known, tinea pedis. Athlete’s foot is spread by direct contact. In the summer months, there are more opportunities for adults and children to be barefoot and therefore a greater risk of getting athlete’s foot.

Below are five tips for preventing this common fungal infection.

  1. Keep feet covered. Avoiding walking barefoot, especially in public places where many other people are barefoot. This would include community pools, seaside restrooms and changing areas, nail salons, gym locker rooms, and communal showers.
  2. Practice good foot hygiene. Wash your feet every day with warm, soapy water. Dry your feet completely. Pay particular attention to the space between your toes.
  3. Wear shoes that are light and breathable and allow for air circulation. Shoes that are made of synthetic materials and are tight may help create an environment where fungal infections thrive.
  4. Keep feet dry. If your feet tend to perspire excessively, wear the type of socks that wick moisture away from the skin. Keep an extra pair of socks with you and change them as soon as you notice they feel damp.
  5. Use a talcum or anti-fungal powder on feet to help keep them dry.
