What Is Causing My Ankle Pain?

Find out the most common causes of ankle pain and when to see a doctor.

No matter whether your ankle pain has appeared out of the blue, or arose from an injury, or is accompanied by swelling and tenderness, our St. Clair Shores, Warren, and Macomb MI podiatrists Dr. Anthony Benenati, Dr. Neil Shaw, and Dr. Philip Watkins understand the importance of finding out what’s causing your symptoms and how to best treat the problem.

The Telltale Signs of Ankle Pain

Common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Stress fractures
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic lateral ankle pain
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome

While you may be able to get your ankle pain under control through simple home care and rest, you may want to consider visiting a podiatrist here in St. Clair Shores, Warren, and Macomb MI if you are experiencing persistent pain and swelling that doesn’t go away or improve within several days of conservative care.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you are dealing with severe pain and swelling, if you experience ankle instability (feeling as if the ankle may give out) or if you can’t put weight on or walk on the affected ankle. You should also call us right away if you develop symptoms of an infection, such as:

  • Fever over 100 F
  • Skin that’s warm to the touch
  • Severe tenderness
  • Visible deformity

For acute forms of ankle pain, often caused by injury, conservative care may be all you need. Conservative treatment includes:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Icing the ankle
  • Wrapping or bracing the ankle
  • Resting and elevating the ankle
  • Wearing supportive footwear

If symptoms don’t improve you should come in for a medical evaluation. Depending on your symptoms, we may need to perform imaging tests to rule out certain conditions or injuries. From there, we can determine the best course of action, whether that requires wearing a protective boot, using crutches, undergoing physical therapy, or (in rare cases) surgery.

If you are dealing with ankle pain, you may not wish to hobble over to your nearest podiatrist’s office. The good news is that our team of podiatrists is also offering telemedicine visits.
