At Benenati Foot & Ankle Care Centers, we hope all of our Macomb County patients are staying safe and healthy during the coronavirus outbreak. We are here for you as always if you have an urgent foot or ankle problem. We are also offering Telemedicine services. You can read more here.
In the meantime, we’d like to offer families a suggestion to help make this time together positive and productive and give everyone something to look forward to. Why not plan a summer vegetable garden? Not only can this be a fun and enjoyable family activity, but it can also help your feet. Fresh vegetables are an essential part of a nutritious diet, and that helps keep your feet (and the rest of your body) healthy.
Plot Your Plot
First, go an expedition in your yard and determine the best place to have your vegetable garden if you haven’t had one before. You can chart the sun and note how many hours of sunlight in different areas help you decide on the best location. If you don’t have a yard, consider container gardening on a deck or an indoor garden.
Pick Your Veggies
Once you know the amount of space you have, you can choose what you’d like to grow. Spend some time looking through catalogs and online gardening sites. Ask each family member for a favorite or new vegetable they would like to grow. You may even want to have children print or cut out pictures of their choices and glue them in a “paper” garden that you can put up on the fridge to remind everyone of what’s coming.
Prep Your Space
Now’s a good time to get some fresh air and get outside to clear the space you want to use for your garden. First, you’ll need to rake the area. Then turn over the soil and remove rocks and roots. Check gardening guides to see when it’s appropriate to add fertilizer or compost. If you are doing indoor or container gardening, wash the pots if you already have them, and if possible, collect small stones to put in the bottoms for drainage.
When the weather and the virus breaks, you’ll be ready to plant!
