Ingrown Toenails Are Uncomfortable

It’s not a surprise that ingrown toenails are uncomfortable and even painful complications. You do not, however, want to be in the position to have to take up the fight against them, since they occur as your toenail drives itself below the skin of your toe! Toenails generally grow along the top of the skin, but ingrown toenails cause pain and can become infected as the nail cuts into the skin. When ingrown toenails aren’t cared for after they first develop, complications can result. A minor inflammation can grow into an infection which can find its way into other parts of your body.

Factors leading to ingrown toenails are self-cutting nails in the wrong way, genetic problems or tight-fitting footwear. Improper footwear is actually the biggest problem. Shoes that are too tight can place an abnormal amount of pressure on the big toe, which can force the nail to bend into the skin of the toe!

Treatment for this condition includes:

  • You need to cut your toenails evenly.
  • Use open-toed shoes so to prevent large pressure forces from being placed on your toenails by other types of shoes.
  • Use padding to avoid toenails from hitting into the shoes.
  • Have them cut to ensure that an infection does not develop.
  • Alternatively, the whole toenail may need to be detached to allow for the new nail to come in properly. The nail bed may require antibiotic treatment to abolish an infection that could have been caused by the ingrown toenail.
