This GenesisPlus™ laser provides an effective alternative to tablet antifungal medicines which need to be processed by the liver or topical medications which are have a low success rate. Based on extensive research findings, the GenesisPlus™ laser procedure is fully FDA cleared for increasing the amount of clear toenail in fungal nails, as well as wart removal, scar treatment, and many other conditions of the toes and feet. Laser therapy is a quick and comfortable way to clear the toenail of fungus discolor without any drug therapy. Clear nail growth can be observed after just a few quick laser treatments.

Laser treatment for toe-nail fungus is quick and easy.

Discoloration and thickening from fungal toenails most often happens to adults and can begin in many different ways, including pedicures, toenail injuries, or even just from tight fitting footwear. However someone gets nail fungus, usually there is nail brittleness, discoloration, and thickening which often includes a change of shape. If left untreated , the fungus becomes increasingly hard to remove, and it can permanently damage the nail and has potential to spread to surrounding nails and skin.

Most over-the-counter, and even prescription, creams and ointments generally do not help in the fight of toenail fungus since they cannot penetrate underneath and into the toenail, where the fungus grows. The most effective tablet medicines for toenail fungus need about 3 months are generally effective but, but need to be processed throught the liver and may interact with other medications. Even if you have a procedure to completely remove a fungal toenail, it may take over (1) year for the toenail to grow back.

FAQ about Toe Nail Fungus

What is Nail Fungus?

Onchymycosis, also know commonly as Nail Fungus, affects about a significant percentage of the population, and it becomes more common as we age or after nail injury. It can cause nails to become yellow or discolored. As the infection progresses, the nails become thick and brittle. Nails can also become painful or ingrown. An infection is caused by contact with the fungus, which is everywhere in the environment, especially swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail spas. Trauma to the nails can also increase the chances of infection, as well as age and poor health. Diabetics are more susceptible to the infection.

What are treatment options for nail Fungus?

Oral drugs can be effective in treating the fungus. The medications can take anywhere from 12 weeks to longer for clearing of the nail to begin. Side effects of tablets are a concern, especially in patients who have liver issues or take other medications. Blood tests are necessary to minimize risk of side effects. Topical cream or ointment drugs less effective in treating nail fungus and restoring clear nails. They must be applied daily. There are no significant side effects with medications applied daily to the nails, but very often, the medication cannot penetrate the nail to reach the infection and results are disappointing. Well studied laser treatments, such as Cutera GenesisPlus™, are effective in treating the toenail infection and often can restore clear nails. Most patients experience at least some improvement. Clinical studies show no adverse effects with laser treatment.

How does the Cutera GenesisPlus™ Laser for Toenail Fungal removal Work?

The Cutera GenesisPlus™ Laser, which is one of the few lasers fully FDA approved in the treatment of nail fungus, works by passing a laser light which gently heats up the skin underneath the infected nail bed. Once the target temperature is reached, the laser has killed the fungus. Since the nails grow very slowly, full results usually are seen in 6-12 months. Following the treatment, post care instructions will be reviewed.

Does the Cutera GenesisPlus™ fungus laser hurt?

The Cutera laser provides a comfortable and safe feedback. Patient feedback is also important during the procedure. A warming sensation will be felt in the nail bed as the laser is passed over the nail. If the nail becomes painful, the patient can take a break. Immediately following the procedure, the nail may feel warm for a few minutes, but most patients can resume normal activity right away.

How many sessions and how long are the fungal nail laser treatments?

Most patients show improvement after one treatment. The required number of treatments will vary depending on how severely the toenail in infected. In severe cases, patients may need three treatments weeks apart. Each treatment session can vary from about 10-30 minutes.

Are the laser treatments covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, despite increasing research proving their high effectiveness, most cosmetic laser treatments are not covered by insurances. We accept most credit cards, Visa and MasterCard as well as Care Credit, a medical care financing option providing 0% interest for 6 months or more.

How soon will I see improvements after Cutera?

The toenails grow at an average rate of 3 mm (one tenth inch) per month. Fingernails require 3 to 6 months to re-grow completely, and toenails require about 12 months. Actual nail growth rate is dependent upon age, gender, season, exercise level, diet, and hereditary factors. As the new nail grows out after laser treatment, the healthy nail will be seen at the base.
